Wales Deaf Futsal squad ready to host Euro qualifiers

A festival of football is coming to Cardiff

Wales’ deaf futsal team are gearing up for the EDSO Deaf Futsal European Qualifiers.

They face Sweden, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Turkey from the 19-20 January at Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Cyncoed Campus, the first time Wales has hosted the European qualification tournament.

One of the squad's star players is Harry Allen, Joe Allen’s brother.

Captain Sam Evans is also a familiar face to many. From Llanelli, he won Big Brother in 2013 and was born with 70-80% hearing loss.

· Wales v Sweden – Friday 19 January – 10.30
· Wales v Bosnia Herzegovina – Friday 19 January – 18.00
· Turkey v Wales – Saturday 20 January – 13.30

Wales Deaf Futsal Team Manager Ashley Thomas said: “The biggest challenge is communication on the pitch – even substitution can be difficult.

“I have to wait for a break in play or if I have to sign to another player to send a message.

“It’s a young team and technically they are very good. Sweden are similarly matched to us so that will be a difficult game.

“And then Turkey are a huge force to be reckoned with. It’s going to be tough, but we are feeling confident.

“We want to attract a good crowd to support this team. There’s a lot of energy and I think people would be surprised at the high standard as well. Hopefully deaf children in Wales will have new role models.”

Entry is free for both days at the Archer's Arena in Cyncoed.
