"Walking football is a great way for older people to stay fit and active in later life. In terms of physical health, there are many benefits associated with walking football, including improvements in cardiovascular fitness, help with weight loss, strengthen bones and muscles, and reduce blood pressure. Walking football also has mental health benefits, improving social opportunities and interaction and in turn help reduce loneliness and isolation, particularly amongst older men.

Walking football is rapidly increasing in popularity, there are now over 400 teams across the UK. Similar interest is taking place in Wales. Supported by the Welsh Football Trust, there are now many venues across Wales offering walking football. Walking football also complements Ageing Well in Wales, the national partnership programme to improve the health and wellbeing of people 50+ in Wales. Chaired and hosted by the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Ageing Well in Wales work to ensure that people lead healthy, happy and active lives as they grow older. With the focus on prevention and improving outcomes for the individual, walking football contributes to many of the programme’s priorities, including the establishment of age and dementia friendly communities, and reduce the detrimental effects of loneliness and social isolation."
