In 2012 the FAW Focus College programme was launched at the Senedd building, Cardiff Bay. The programme provides colleges with an opportunity to benchmark themselves against a set of quality standards provided by the FAW. Along with recognising the true breadth of their existing delivery, the programme aims to promote the following strategic objectives:

  • support player retention at youth level and a growth in the women's game;
  • develop new active coaches that will support the growth of junior football;
  • develop Academy structures for boys and girls aged 16 to 19 through partnerships with Colleges of Further Education;

Establishing creative partnerships are fundamental in supporting the Welsh Football Trusts higher level objective to grow the game and raise standards. Welsh Colleges Sport work closely with us to promote the programme and ensure that students maximise the benefits of the programme.

Secretary of the British Colleges Sport – West Division, Paul Sanderson says 'The continuing support of the Trust has been extremely important in helping Welsh College Football, both the male and female sides, to progress. We have been able to play more international fixtures, have more training days and assist students to attend sessions because of this support, and we look forward to a continuation and development of our partnership.'

'The Football Leaders Course is invaluable to college students as it is the initial qualification on the coaching ladder and is a stepping stone for students to becoming football coaches' – Paul Sanderson
